do you know what "minimum margin" is?
Category: glossary by Marisa Z. From Riverside, United States
the "minimum margin " is The initial amount required to be deposited in a margin account before trading on margin or selling short. For example, the NYSE and the NASD require investors to deposit a minimum of $2,000 in cash or securities to open a margin account. Keep in mind that this amount is only a minimum - some brokerages may require you to deposit more than $2,000. When you buy on margin, there are key levels - as governed by the Federal Reserve Board's Regulation T - that must be maintained throughout the life of a trade. The minimum margin, which states that a broker can't extend any credit to accounts with less than $2,000 in cash (or securities) is the first requirement. Second, an initial margin of 50% is required for a trade to be entered. Third, the maintenance margin says that you must maintain equity of at least 25% or be hit with a margin call.

do you know what the "ulcer index" is?
Category: glossary by S. Blevins from Austria
"ulcer index " is An indicator developed by Peter G. Martin and Byron B. McCann that is used to measure the riskiness of investments such as securities, commodities, indexes or mutual funds. It is created by factoring in the depth and duration of drawdowns from recent peaks. A large UI value indicates that the security represents undue risk and an investor who holds it will likely need to wait longer for the investment's price to climb back to its recent highs. This tool is often used in conjunction with other risk measurements such as standard deviation. Investors who are risk averse should probably stay away from securities with high UI values because, if these securities experience a severe decline, they are unlikely to recover in the near future. Since the ulcer index measures change from a recent peak, it is more practical to think of it as a short-term risk measure.
