please tell me what the "dynamic momentum index" is

Category: glossary by X. U. From San Diego, United States

"dynamic momentum index " is An indicator used in technical analysis that determines overbought and oversold conditions of a particular asset. This indicator is very similar to the relative strength index (RSI). The main difference between the two is that the RSI uses a fixed number of time periods (usually 14), while the dynamic momentum index uses different time periods as volatility changes. This indicator is interpreted in the same manner as the RSI where readings below 30 are deemed to be oversold and levels over 70 are deemed to be overbought. The number of time periods used in the dynamic momentum index decreases as volatility in the underlying asset increases, making this indicator more responsive to changing prices than the RSI.

    please define the "defensive acquisition"

Category: glossary by H. Noble from Cambridge, United Kingdom

The act of firms acquiring other firms and assets as a defense against market downturns or possible takeovers. A defensive acquisition contrasts with the normal impetus for an acquisition, which is usually increased market share or revenue. A company will sometimes engage in a defensive acquisition strategy by purchasing smaller firms that are in the same business. By acquiring these firms, the company protects itself from takeovers from other companies, which, as a result of antitrust laws, may not be able to merge with the enlarged company without creating a monopoly. If a North American car company acquired an SUV company as a result of the projected rise in demand for SUVs, this would be an example of a defensive strategy through the purchase of assets.

please define the "razor - razorblade model"

Category: glossary by Marisol G. From United States

a "razor - razorblade model " is A business tactic involving the sale of dependent goods for different prices - one good is sold at a discount, while the second dependent good is sold at a considerably higher price. If you've ever purchased razors and their replacement blades, you know this business method well. The razors are practically free, but the replacement blades are extremely expensive. The video-game industry is another user of this pricing strategy. They sell the game consoles at a relatively low price, recouping the lost profits on the high-priced games.

please tell me what the "total housing expense" is

Category: glossary by S. Mcknight from Brest, France

The sum of a homeowner's monthly mortgage principal and interest payments, hazard insurance premiums, property taxes and homeowner's association fees, plus monthly debt service. Monthly debt service consists of payments on credit cards, installment loans and other debts. A borrower's total housing expense is used in the calculation of a back-end ratio, which is used to qualify a borrower for a loan. A borrower's total housing expense as a percentage of his or her total gross monthly income (the back-end ratio) generally cannot exceed 56%; however, that limit can vary slightly based on the lender, loan program and market conditions. For a borrower whose back-end ratio exceeds the limit, compensating factors such as a good credit history, a low loan-to-value ratio, and substantial net worth might be considered by underwriters in granting approval for a mortgage.
